March Minus the Madness

Well so the only NC team to make it forward in the NCAA Basketball Championships is the Lady Tar Heels. Georgetown beat the Tar Heel Men last weekend in overtime, it was surprisingly upsetting, in spite of my Jesuit allegiances. For a while, all three Triangle Women's teams were still in, and then it was just the Heels.
College hoops makes for great entertainment, you have to believe me considering I have always hated watching sports. But watching the Heels play is pure pleasure, they have such a well-mannered and strong team. I think it's especially striking because I grew up around more of a soccer culture, and soccer is a sport that is as sparing with its scores as b-ball is profligate. You watch for two hours and a soccer score might still be a grinding nil-nil, players strewn about the field running, running, running. Then you watch hoops, the score is 81-73, points are flying left and right and there's still 3 minutes to go, the length of the court traversed in an average 3.5 seconds and boom another score. Whoo!
So anyway this week we have entered into 80 degree days, we had a thunderstorm roll through at 10pm. Chloe, who has developed a panicked fear of lawn mowers, chain saws and drills, never roused from her slumber even as the thunderbolts cracked overhead. Thank goodness. Now if summer could just be like this, the whole neighborhood out and about with the kids, free of sweat and mosquitoes.
